But one fabled device has left scientists speculating on its existence for hundreds of years — the death ray. For his 2022 science project, Sener recreated the Archimedes screw, a device for raising and moving water. Sener found the death ray to be one of the more intriguing devices — sometimes referred to as the heat ray. Archimedes’ death ray is more commonly speculated to have been an array of several mirrors or polished shields. Sener’s mom, Melanie, was not surprised by her son’s choice in science project.

That's when he found the so-called death ray. AdvertisementSener surmised the Archimedes death ray wasn't impossible if it had used many more mirrors and a hotter heat source. A long history of death ray attemptsMany others have tried to recreate the death ray, with varying levels of success. Most recently, the TV show "Mythbusters" took on Archimedes' death ray three times and never managed to make it work. The reflective surfaces and fiery boats could have become conflated in the ensuing centuries, possibly creating the myth of a death ray.

The NewsTeenagers who use cannabis, alcohol and nicotine are more likely to have underlying psychiatric symptoms, and worse symptoms, than their peers who are not regularly using substances, new research has found. The research, published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics, found that such substances are linked to an array of symptoms and conditions, including anxiety, depression, hyperactivity and suicidal ideation. These findings suggest that asking adolescents about substance use may provide a powerful screening tool when looking for underlying mental health issues, researchers said. “Universally screening for psychiatric symptoms in the context of all types of substance use is what we think might be most important,” said Brenden Tervo-Clemmens, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Minnesota and lead author of the paper. “All the symptoms of mental health we examined, be it depression, suicidal thoughts, ADHD, were elevated no matter what the substance was,” he added.

The U.S. beat Mexico in extra time two years ago to clinch the title and will have a rematch with their rivals in the semi-finals. The training camp starts on June 4, just days after Anthony Hudson stepped down as interim manager of the U.S. team, with assistant B.J. Reyna was named in the training squad on Thursday.

USA soccer forward Christian Pulisic has been cleared to play in the team's round-of-16 game against the Netherlands, the U.S. Men's Soccer Team announced Friday. Brenden Aaronson replaced Pulisic in Tuesday’s game. The U.S. Men’s Soccer Team had described Pulisic’s status after the game as day-to-day. Pulisic, a Hershey, Pennsylvania, native who plays for Chelsea in the British Premier League, ranks as one of two players with the seventh-most goals — 21 — in USA soccer history. It's clear the U.S. Men's Soccer Team believes Pulisic's participation in Tuesday's game will be clutch.
Pulisic's 38th minute goal proved enough for the Americans to advance at the expense of their geopolitical rivals in an eagerly awaited rematch of their 1998 World Cup group stage meeting, which Iran had won 2-1. "But it's a wonderful thing when one of your best players is also one of the most hard working. The Americans finished two points behind Group B winners England to reach the last 16 for the fifth time since 1994. Second half we showed what we could do determination wise. Iran only needed a point to advance but they were largely restricted to playing on the counter and unable to muster a credible attempt at scoring until the second half.
Four years after watching the World Cup from home, the U.S. Men’s National Team revealed which players it’s sending to Qatar—with a couple surprises and major questions about how the squad will line up in less than two weeks. The Americans, who begin the tournament on Nov. 21 against Wales, will be led by Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic, who has for years been the pride of U.S. soccer. The 24-year-old is part of perhaps the deepest and most talented section of the roster, its attacking unit. It also features 19-year-old Giovanni Reyna, who plays his club soccer for Borussia Dortmund in Germany; Timothy Weah, a 22-year-old with Lille in the French league; and fellow 22-year-old Brenden Aaronson who has hit a good run of form for the English Premier League’s Leeds United.
